Starting in 2015, Christina and I embraced the boating lifestyle. In the early stages of our adventures, we explored countless lakes across Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. Nearly every weekend was spent towing our boat to another lake to explore. Among the many beautiful spots we discovered, Barren River Lake emerged as one of our favorite hidden gems.
Why Barren River is unique…
Many larger lakes in Kentucky and Tennessee are busy summer hubs. Barren River Lake, while popular, remains more relaxed compared to other lakes. On the other hand, Lake Cumberland is known for its annual poker run, where boats race across marinas competing for the best hand.
Despite the excitement, we prefer a laid-back day, enjoying tubing with family and friends, then unwinding in a quiet cove.
As an avid fisherman, I know firsthand that Barren River Lake offers some of the best bass fishing around. The lake is complemented by many large boat ramps which makes the boat launching process much faster and easier. There are also many tackle stores scattered around the lake. Barren River Lake’s prime location near Glasgow/Bowling Green, Kentucky, offers great dining, entertainment, and easy access to grocery stores. During a lake vacation, convenience is key; I enjoy having dinner nearby or picking up snacks without long drives.
Where to stay…
There are three types of accommodations near the lake. The main options include staying at a hotel in Glasgow, the State Park lodge, or renting a lake house.
Staying in Glasgow: The Glasgow area boasts several excellent hotels. We became quite familiar with them during our frequent off-season trips in our quest to find land for a lake house. Glasgow is a medium-sized town that features major retail stores, diverse dining options, and a movie theater. Whether you’re passing through during the off-season or heading to the lake to rent a boat, Glasgow is an outstanding choice. I must highlight the superb food at Gondolier Italian Restaurant. They serve remarkable pizza at reasonable prices—an all-around fantastic option.
Staying at the State Park Lodge: The lodge is one of our families favorite spots. It has an onsite marina where you can rent slips for your boat. Also, there is a very nice restaurant and buffet at the lodge. Generally, these types of places only have mediocre food, but not here. The food is great! The rooms are on the larger side and very comfortable. They also have boat trailer parking which makes it nice not to have to worry about that.
Renting a house: A few years ago, my youngest son and I went on a fishing trip. We rented a lake house near the Port Oliver Boat Ramp. This was a convenient choice because we had a bass boat that we could park right next to the house. Typically, bass boats are not left in a slip overnight, so it is important to find a place where the boat can be safely parked when not in use. Additionally, being close to a large boat ramp made early morning boat launches at 6 AM very easy.
What to do if it rains…
Glasgow, the surrounding area has many great options.
Mammoth Cave: If you haven’t visited Mammoth Cave National Park, I suggest you do. The park contains numerous miles of underground caves, a very nice visitor center, and an overall pleasant place to visit. When our boys were young, we opted for the shorter guided tours. Experiencing what goes on under our feet is a very interesting thing to experience. Mammoth Cave is located approximately 30 minutes by car from Glasgow.
National Corvette Museum: A must-visit for Corvette enthusiasts, featuring rare models from throughout its history. Ideal for a rainy day when boating isn’t an option.
Dutch County Safari Park: My youngest and I took an afternoon off from fishing and visited the Safari Park – it was great! I have to say from the parking lot the layout can look a little less than impressive. However, when you get onto their grounds, you will see all kinds of animals. It was one of the more memorable afternoons. There is a competing animal park called Kentucky Down Under. I have not personally been to it; however, I have heard good things about it as well.
Nashville, TN: Just 1.5 hours away, Nashville offers everything a big city does and more. Nashville is known for close ties to the music industry with the Country Music Hall of Fame being right in the heart of the city. They also has many professional sports from NFL, MLS, and NHL teams all calling Nashville home.
Hidden Gem…
Barren River Lake is one of those places that you will find to be a special place. My wife and I enjoyed it so much we came very close to investing in a lake house on the south side of the lake. The lake checks all of the boxes for a great weekend away for either the entire family or a romantic getaway.
